Zermatt Winter, Beyond the Pistes

Half of Zermatt’s winter visitors never clip into a ski. The resort knows it, prices for it, and quietly runs one of the best non-skier winters in the Alps. Ranked, with the honest caveats:

1. The Rotenboden sledding run

2. Snow tubing at Plateau Rosa

Lanes on the glacier at 3,458 m beside Testa Grigia station. Zero skill, maximum shrieking, and the only entry on this list that also runs in summer. The official Testa Grigia ticket includes park access when it’s operating.

3. Gornergrat for the views alone

The cogwheel train needs no skis and no fitness; the ridge at 3,089 m faces the Matterhorn across the valley, and winter light beats summer haze more days than not.

4. The glacier palace

Inside Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: ice sculptures and a corridor cut through the glacier itself, included on the Testa Grigia ticket. Cold, blue, and better than it sounds - it’s the highest thing many visitors will ever stand inside.

5. Winter walking paths

Groomed, marked, and mostly downhill if you plan with the trains. The Riffelberg-to-Riffelalp stretch under winter sun is the quiet version of everything above.
